Biography

Guillaume Bruère, born in 1976 in Châtellerault, France, is a painter, draftsman, sculptor and performer. He lives and works in Berlin.

His work has been exhibited at the Kunsthaus Zurich, the Fondation VanGogh Arles and at MARTa Herford. Bruère has, furthermore, collaborated with Sasha Walz and Barbara Frey in dance and theater. His fragile and impulsive works, ranging from small-format drawings to monumental paintings, are charged with a fulminant energy.

For many years, he reinterpreted important works of art history in numerous renowned museums. Color, collage, and a relentless search for expressiveness all contribute to creating a distinctive artistic universe, evident both in Bruère's reinterpretations of old paintings and in public performances in which he visibly drives himself to the point of exhaustion.

For more than a decade, Bruère has worked in spaces at the margins of society, including refugee shelters and more recently, homeless shelters, where he finds the subjects for his haunting portraits.
